Free Riding on Gnutella Revisited: The Bell Tolls?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Individuals who use peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing networks such as Gnutella1 face a social dilemma. They must decide whether to contribute to the common good by sharing files or maximize their personal experience by free riding, downloading files while not contributing any to the network. Individuals gain no personal benefits from uploading files (in fact, it's inconvenient), so it's "rational" for users to free ride. However, significant numbers of free riders degrade the entire system's utility, creating a "tragedy of the digital commons."2

Free Riding on Gnutella
extensive analysis of user traffic on Gnutella shows a significant amount of free riding in the system. By sampling messages on the Gnutella network over a 24-hour period, we established that almost 70% of Gnutella users share no files, and nearly 50% of all responses are returned by the top 1% of sharing hosts. Furthermore, we found out that free riding is distributed evenly between domains, s...

An extensive analysis of user traffic on Gnutella shows a significant amount of free riding in the system. By sampling messages on the Gnutella network over a 24-hour period, we established that 70% of Gnutella users share no files, and 90% of the users answer no queries. Furthermore, we found out that free riding is distributed evenly between domains, so that no one group contributes significa...
متن کاملControlling Free Riding using Extended Point Based Incentive Mechanism in Peer-to-Peer Networks
Over the years of the emergence of peer-to-peer systems a phenomenon named ‘Free Riding’ has affected its performance and become a serious threat to be resolved. Free riding phenomenon was first felt in the study of Gnutella. As the number of free riders increases, the performance of the overall system decreases as free riders use resources without giving anything to the system. To solve the pr...
متن کاملCapitalizing on Free Riders in P2P Networks
Free riding is a common phenomenon in P2P networks. Although several mechanisms have been proposed to handle free riding— mostly to exclude free riders, few of them have actually been adopted in practical systems. This may be attributed to the fact that they are nontrivial, and that completely eliminating free riders could jeopardize the sheer power created by the huge volume of participants in...
متن کاملFor whom the desert bell tolls: heat stroke or stroke
Heat stroke is the most complicated and dangerous amongst heat injuries that can lead to irreversible injury and even death with itself or with creating predisposibility to different diseases. The following case report depicts a patient who presented primarily with impairment of consciousness after walking 45 km in the summer heat to cross the Syria-Turkey border and la...
